Locking up your Home for Safetyy
- Lock-bumping, old garage door openers susceptible to
invaders
Protect yourself and your belongings with a new garage door
operator with rolling-code technology, making it virtually
impossible for criminals to gain access to your garage – and
possibly to your home.
Non-Reversing Garage Door Openers - The U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission has published a
safety alert advising homeowners to inspect their
garage door openers to insure they automatically reverse when
encountering an object. An opener not equipped with this feature
can present a risk to children and pets – even resulting in
death.
The safety alert also advises homeowners to make adjustments
to their openers' force and limit settings. Contact Overhead
Door of the LA Basin to make repairs or adjustments that the
homeowner is not comfortable making.
Garage Door Balance
- According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,
garage doors
need to be properly balanced and should not bind or
stick when being opened or closed. A properly balanced door will
stay in place when stopped in any partially opened position.
An improperly balanced door could come crashing down,
possibly striking someone beneath the door. If you fear that
your door is not properly balanced or that it sticks or binds
while being opened or closed, you are advised to contact a
professional like Overhead Door of the LA Basin to have your
door serviced.
Secondary Entrapment Protection System - All
garage door operators – beginning in January, 1993 – are
required to be equipped with a secondary entrapment protection
system, often seen as an photoelectric eye or edge sensor.
Homeowners must follow the federal guidelines when installing
garage door openers, which include location and installation
steps for these safety devices.
Testing Your Garage Door Opener - Garage door
operators should be periodically tested. This can be done by the
homeowner or by a professional garage door installer. Testing
the automatic reverse feature can be done by placing a 2x4 block
of wood under the door on the center of the floor. The opener
should reverse automatically when striking the 2x4. If it does
not meet this test, homeowners are advised to disengage the
"quick release" mechanism and only operate the door by hand
until a service call can be made by Overhead Door of the LA
Basin.
